Bank of Brazil to put US$2,5 in Belo Monte’s dam

The Bank of Brazil should borrow R$ 5.5 billion (near to US$ 2,5 billion) to build the dam of Belo Monte, in the north, according to today highlights the newspaper Valor Economico.

This would represent 30% of the cost of the plant, which should be the third largest in the world after the Three Gorges in China and Itaipu on the border between Brazil and Paraguay.

The work, in the midst of the Xingu Indian reservation, has caused controversy on environmental grounds. Filmmaker James Cameron, director of Avatar, is campaigning against the dam, and actress Sigourney Weaver, who did narrate a video denouncing the work.
