Brazilian environmental authorities OKs Belo Monte’s dam

The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and of the Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) granted today (26) authorization for the beginning of the construction of the Belo Monte’s dam, in Rio Xingu, State of Pará, in the Amazon rainforest. The acting president of the Ibama, Américo Ribeiro Tunes, signed a vegetation suppression authorization, that permits clears of an area of 238 hectares in the localities of construction of the factory. The document authorizes to Norte Energia, responsible by the work, to “proceed the suppression of relative vegetation to the implementation of infrastructure of support (camp, industrial plant and area of stock of soil and wood)”.
