Dilma Rousseff denies Battisti’s extradition

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff sent today a letter to the president of the Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, informing that she is going to maintain the decision taken by his predecessor, Lula, of do not extradite former communist militant Cesare Battisti, that is accused by the Italian government of involvement in the death of four people in the decade of 70.

Rousseff denied the decision have been taken by political motives and whined the divergences between the two countries in that episode and also whined what has classified as  “unfair manifestations against Brazil”.  The president reaffirmed that do not extradite Cesare Battisti was a “sovereign decision” that was not related with any value judgment about the Italian law.

The final decision about the case, designates Rousseff, is going to be taken by the judicial power of Brazil in February, when the judges return of their vacation.
